Banzuke

About the data

Where the numbers come from, how they're checked, and how to tell us when they're wrong.

Banzuke is an independent sumo site, built in Australia. It isn't affiliated with the Japan Sumo Association. It holds 411 official basho since March 1958, 9,136 wrestlers and 751,430 bouts.

Where it comes from

Results, banzuke and wrestler details come from sumo-api.com, an independent sumo data service. We keep our own copy, so the site keeps working if the source goes quiet, and every page says when its data last changed.

During a basho we check for new results every 10 minutes, from 8:30 am to 7 pm Tokyo time. A result shows here once the source has published it, which can be a while after the bout itself.

Before the history went live we checked it against independent records. Hakuho's career, for example, matches SumoDB exactly: 45 top-division titles, 1,187 career wins, 1,093 top-division wins. Some things the source doesn't hold yet, like champions before November 1959, so those pages say so rather than guess.

The style ratings and anything marked as our own analysis are ours. They aren't official.

See something wrong?

Tell us. Every report gets checked against the official records, and fixed if it's wrong.

This is a small independent project. We care about getting it right, and sometimes we don't.
