Banzuke

ōzeki

Champion, the second-highest rank.

Ōzeki is the second-highest rank, often translated as champion. The usual benchmark for promotion is 33 wins over three tournaments at sekiwake or komusubi, though that's a guideline. An ōzeki is only demoted after two losing records in a row. If he drops, 10 wins in his first tournament back at sekiwake restores the rank.

kadoban
An ōzeki who must win at least eight bouts or lose the rank.
yokozuna
Grand champion, the top rank. A yokozuna can't be demoted.
sekiwake
The third rank, just below ōzeki.
san'yaku
The named ranks above maegashira. Sources differ on whether yokozuna counts.
