tsuriyane

The shrine-style roof that hangs over the ring.

The tsuriyane is the roof that hangs over the ring, shaped like a Shinto shrine. A coloured tassel hangs from each corner, one for each of the four seasons. Until 1952 the roof stood on pillars, which came down so the crowd could see.
