shin-deshi 新弟子

A shin-deshi is a new recruit. To join he must have finished compulsory schooling and be under 23, or under 25 with qualifying amateur results. New recruits spend six months at the association's sumo school, and their first bouts are maezumō, before they have a place on the banzuke.
